New Theatre Royal Street Dance

Throwback to summer 2017 when Funk Format run an educational residency for children aged 12 to 16. The Community Development Team of the New Theatre Royal and Arts Work held a four-day programme for children in care, with each day featuring a different performing arts activity. Sasha and fellow ambassadors taught the children a day residency workshop. During the class, younger ambassadors bettered their communication skills, as well as gaining invaluable experience in teaching. The children were taught the basics of authentic street dance styles, and were also taught a brief history of the Hip Hop culture.

The children also improved their ability to work together in a group. One of the group tasks was to create a ‘spider diagram’, where the children discussed with one another and listed various advantages of learning dance. They named many physical benefits, and then went beyond, discussing positive impact on mental health. The second group task was for the children to work with our ambassadors and create a choreography using newly learned material. This improved their dancing ability, whilst also improving their co-ordination and teamwork skills. The workshop was successful.

For the ambassadors and volunteers, it was a new experience teaching for an extended period of time. The children were also having fun whilst learning about Hip-Hop culture roots and opportunities for development, which was the aim of the workshop.
